Vano Mtvralashvili: Biodiesel To Contribute To Georgian Agriculture

Tbilisi, July 18 (Prime-News Business) – Catastrophic growth of oil prices in the world and the increasing need in crude force countries to think of alternative energy sources, Vano Mtvralashvili, Chairman of Georgian Union of Oil products Enterprisers, Importers and Customers, stated at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to him, biodiesel is considered as one of alternative sources of energy.

Biodiesel (methyl ether) is produced as a result of chemical reaction of vegetable oils. It has the qualities of fuel material, high capacity for inflammation and high cetane rating.

Rape is one of the most widely used plants for production of biodiesel. Rape is used in foodstuffs production (oil, margarine, mayonnaise), as well as production of technical products (fuel, soap, perfume, rubber, varnish paint) and pharmaceutics. Waste products are used as forage doe animals and poultry.

Rape sown area makes up 20 million hectares in Europe, the USA and Asia. About 30-33% of so-called rapeseed oil (colza oil) are produced out of 1 ton of rapeseeds. Biodiesel and glycerin are produced from rapeseed oil.

According to Vano Mtvralashvili, production of biodiesel made up 10 million tons in 2005, while in 2007 this figure is to grow up to 15 million tons. Biodiesel fuel is used in many European countries and the USA. Germany produces 1.3 million tons biodiesel per year, France – 780 thousand tons per year, Poland – 230 tons per year. It is planned to consider transition to trade with biodiesel at filling stations in the USA, where agriculture is highly developed.

Introduction of biodiesel fuel in Georgia will first of all contribute to development of agriculture, which is quite topical in Georgia, as new jobs will be created and those, who are already busy in this sphere, will get additional sustainable income. At the same time this will create an additional source of energy. Biodiesel-producing enterprise will be rather profitable and will bring additional revenues to the State Budget, stated at the Georgian Union of Oil products Enterprisers, Importers and Customers.

The Union addressed the Government of Georgia with a request to study the abovementioned issue and, in case of a positive decision, set up a governmental program, which will provide for development of this branch, attract investments and create a corresponding legal base.
