Belarus to increase areas under rapeseedBelaPAN Minsk, 8 August. The total area sown to rapeseed will be increased to 400,000 hectares this year, Yadviha Plyuk, a laboratory head at the agriculture research center of the National Academy of Sciences, told reporters in Minsk on Friday. According to her, a total of one million tons of rapeseed are expected to be produced in the country annually in the future, which would be mostly used for human consumption. This year Belarus has a record high rapeseed output of about 600,000 tons. Ms. Pilyuk noted that rapeseed in the main oil crop grown in Belarus. Although the country is one of the northernmost areas in the world where rapeseed is cultivated, all crops of domestic breeds survive winters successfully, she said. Belarus exports rapeseed to Russia, Ukraine and Moldova, she added. Natural rapeseed oil contains 50 percent erucic acid, which is mildly toxic to humans. In Europe, rapeseed is primarily cultivated for the production of animal feed and biodiesel.
