MOSCOW, Dec 23 (PRIME) -- Russia's first boiler station to operate on biofuel was launched Friday in the Stavropol Region, the regional governor's press office said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

The station's overhaul cost more than 24 million rubles, power utility Kraiteploenergo CEO Alexander Smagin said, adding that the expenditures are expected to be recouped quickly.

The station is operating on low cost straw pellets, while using new technology that ensures lower greenhouse gas emissions than at traditional facilities operating on natural gas.

The construction of five similar boiler stations in the region's Krasnogvardeisky and Novoaleksandrovsky districts is planned in the near future.

A total of 47 boiler stations in the region's 18 districts were modernized in 2011, with an additional 40 boiler stations and thermal grids expected to be upgraded in 2012. A full modernization of the region's thermal power complex is slated to be completed by 2020.
