The production of biofuel in Ukraine was a topic discussed during the Ukrainian-Brazilian negotiations in Kyiv late in February, according to the statement. "We are interested in alternative kinds of fuel. Brazil is very determined in this question and we are even prepared to create a Ukrainian-Brazilian joint venture to produce biofuel in Ukraine," said Brazilian Ambassador to Ukraine Antonio Fernando Cruz de Mello during the negotiations. Brazil hopes a workgroup will be created for the implementation of the project in April. The statement reads that Brazil is the second largest producer of ethanol in the world after the United States and the largest exporter of ethanol in the world. "Brazil actively popularizes the topic of biofuel in the world. Since Ukraine's potential of biofuel production is used at the level of 1% and the country imports nearly 50% of energy carriers, it looks attractive for Brazil," reads the statement by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy. The parties also expressed their mutual interest in cooperation in other industries related with the farming sector. This concerns in particular the export of Brazilian meat to Ukraine, production and supplies of fertilizers to Brazil. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Brazil in March 2008 said it was prepared to cooperate with Ukraine in the field of production and use of biofuel. In early 2010, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine endorsed a strategy to reform the tax system until 2018 envisaging among other moves the introduction of zero excise duty on ethyl spirit used for the production of biofuel.
