Bulgarian producers say biofuel to ease dependence on Russian gas

ADP Renewable Energy Track

(ADP News) - Jan 13, 2009 - The Bulgarian Government should work out measures to encourage biofuels as an alternative to Russian gas supplies, the National Biofuels Association in Bulgaria said in a statement to the media.

The announcement comes amid a severe gas crisis which left Russian-gas-dependent Bulgaria without supplies in freezing temperatures.

Bulgaria has enough raw materials to make its own biodiesel and bioethanol and reduce dependence on Russian gas supplies, said Miryana Misheva of the association.

"Indirect taxation now makes biofuels more expensive than fossil fuels," said Dimitar Tortopov, fuel retail head at EKO Bulgaria petrol filling stations.

In October last year Bulgarian Customs Agency said biofuel makers would be levied with excise on pure products until the European Commission issues a notification clearing the application of tax incentives in the sector.
