SOFIA (Bulgaria)

Bulgaria's largest sugar producer Zaharni Zavodi plans to raise its alcohol output by 57% to 11 million litres this year, it said on Monday.

The company expects sales of alcohol to exceed 12% of its consolidated sales for last year seen at about 90 million levs ($67.5 million/46 million euro), it said in a statement.

Zaharni Zavodi nearly tripled its production of alcohol to 7.0 million litres in 2007.

«Until recently demand for high-quality alcohol on the Bulgarian market was being met through imports from Ukraine and Russia. It is evident that the high quality [output], which the plant provides, leads to substitution of alcohol imports,» Zaharni Zavodi said.

The company plans to invest up to 10 million levs in its alcohol production unit by the end of 2009, mainly in raising environmental standards, Zaharni Zavodi executive director Georgi Uzunov told SeeNews.

He also said Zaharni Zavodi plans to build a bioethanol plant with output capacity of 10,000 litres per day. Uzunov provided no estimated volume of investment or a timeframe. He said the company is currently conducting a feasibility study, results of which will become clear no earlier than the end of February.

«[We will sell] in the European countries, we do not count much on the Bulgarian market,» Uzunov said, referring to sales of bioethanol to be produced by the future plant. Biofuel, including bioethanol, is expected to account for 1.0% of Bulgaria's fuel consumption by 2010 and up to 2.0% in 2015, according to plans drafted by the government's Energy Efficiency Agency.

Zaharni Zavodi started exports of alcohol to the rest of the European Union in 2007, mainly to Austria, Greece and Italy, where the alcohol is used for production of liquor, and expects to launch sales to Germany, the statement said.

Trading with countries of the European Union became easier after Bulgaria joined the bloc on January 1, 2007.

Zaharni Zavodi shares traded at 14.0 levs at 1152 GMT on the stock exchange in Sofia, up 1.8% from the previous close.
