Duma calls for state program on bioethanol production

MOSCOW, August 28 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's State Duma has proposed to draft a state program for the production of 1.8 million tonnes of bioethanol a year, the head of the subcommittee on natural resources, Oleg Valenchuk, told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

Under this program bioethanol plants should be built, research works on ethanol fuel production completed as well as financial support for ethanol fuel producers provided, he said.

Valenchuk stressed that under the conditions of a global food crisis threat it is inadmissible for Russia to produce bioethanol from food products and food waste as this would increase the deficit and lead to irrational use of agricultural fields.

The biochemical plant in the Kirov region developed a unique technology for production of biofuel from sawdust and other wood waste.

"With this technology Russia outstrips the whole world for several years," he said.

"The production of bioethanol has a strong economic potential and can turn into one of Russia's economic locomotives," the legislator said.
