Kazakhstan To Produce 1.0 Mln Cu M Bioethanol Annually by 2010

Energy and Commodities Digest

Kazakhstan plans to begin producing up to one billion litres of bioethanol annually by 2010, Berik Ospanov, an Agricultural Ministry official said on September 7, 2007.

Raw materials for the biofuel will be low quality wheat usually used as cattle feed, as well as grains residue. The necessary quanitites of wheat are seen at one million tonnes per year, and grains residue to be used for biofuel production is planned at 1.9 million tonnes per year.

At a later stage, annual bioethanol production may reach 2.1 billion litres, Ospanov noted.

Preliminary analyses show that Kazakh biofuel will be 10 pct cheaper to produce than Brazilian biofuel, and around twice cheaper than U.S. and European production.

According to Ospanov, Kazakhstan has all needed economic conditions to make biofuel production feasible: growing domestic demand, export potential, as well as large areas suitable for growing grains and oilseeds.
