MOSCOW, October 23 (Itar-Tass) - Moscow will produce biofuel from straw, city mayor Yuri Luzhkov told an international conference on alternative sources of energy for big cities on Thursday.

"We are now beginning to produce bioethanol and biobutanol from straw," he said. Moreover, the capital will use dimethyl ether as an alternative to petrol, at refrigerating installations in particular.

The mayor said that biofuel should not be produced from grain crops as this will increase world hunger.

"At present, there are around 850 million people, who suffer malnutrition. Around 780 million tonnes of corn is produced all over the globe. America and Europe sent around 100 million tonnes of corn a year to the production of bioethanol. Thus, the number of those suffering malnutrition may increase to 1 billion," Luzhkov said
