Home / Bioethanol / News Moscow to supply Europe with biofuels.Nachrichten fur Aussenhandel By 2010, Russia will be one of the most important suppliers of biofuels in the EU. Prime costs will be a third lower than those in the EU. Projects exist so far only on paper. Russia does not yet produce bioethanol or biodiesel but the first plants are already being built. The number of investment projects is around 20. The ministry of agriculture sees biofuels as an important element in helping get the agricultural industry back on its feet. Eyes are not so much on the domestic market as on the strong demand in the EU, which Russia estimates has to import 5 M tonnes of alternative fuels. Vegetable oil producer Efko is to erect a $20 M biodiesel plant. The company could erect capacity of over 100,000 tonnes within six months. Other agricultural holdings have similar plans. Russian company Titan has so far produced only in Kazakhstan because it offers more support for biofuels production than Moscow. Titan began erecting a EUR 150 M, 150,000 tonnes/y bioethanol plant in Omsk at the end of 2006. Agroindustrial group Pawa plans a similar plant from mid-2008. Masloprodukt is to erect a EUR 30 M biodiesel plant by 2009. And Lukoil is erecting a bodiesel line at its refinery in Burgas, Bulgaria.
