Russian Federation Sugar Report

Sugar beet production and processing are rising as farmers and refineries increase sugar beet acreage to implement the Russian government's plan to reach 67 percent sugar self-sufficiency by 2012.

Pava’s Net Profit up 2.3%, to $1mn, in 2007

In January-September 2007, net profits of Pava, Russia's agricultural company, rose by 2.3% from the respective last year's figure, to RUR26.891mn ($1.1mn, or €0.75mn), as calculated to Russian Accounting Standards on the basis of unaudited reports.

Russian Federation Grain and Feed November Monthly Update 2007.

November's grain production estimate for Russia is 79.7 million metric tons (mmt). Wheat production forecast is raised to 48.1 mmt (7.1 percent increase from 2006 crop), while barley production forecast is decreased to 16.4 mmt (down 9.4 percent from 2006 crop). In order to stop domestic grain product prices from rising along with world prices, the Russian Government introduced export tariffs on wheat and barley, started selling grain from the state intervention reserves, and has undertaken administrative measures to freeze retail prices for certain types of bread. Russia's grain export forecast is raised to 12.0 mmt, including 11.0 mmt wheat and 0.9 mmt barley.

Kazakhstan, Republic of Grain and Feed Grain Production and Trade Update

Current estimates of Kazakhstans MY2007/08 total grain production total 20 million tons (MMT) including a record 16.0 MMT of wheat, 2.3 MMT of barley and 1.7 MMT of other grains. According to preliminary official data, grain harvested area was 15.4 million hectares, including 12.8 million hectares of wheat, slightly more than the previous year. Favorable weather conditions in major wheat producing region resulted in average yields 15 percent above MY2006/07.

Putin encourages farmers to produce biofuels: Russia as a green energy giant

For those of us who thought energy exporters are not interested in biofuels or feel threatened by them, think again. The world's largest oil and gas exporter, Russia, has called on its farmers to join the global transition to biofuels.

During his televised conversation with Russians last Tuesday, Vladimir Putin told farmers they stand to benefit from capturing part of the emerging market for bioenergy. Few countries have as large a biofuels potential as Russia, he said, given its gigantic territory which stretches across 11 time zones.

Biochemical plant will be put in service in Western Kazakhstan by year-end

BM LLP commissions a biochemical plant in Western Kazakhstan oblast in December 2007, the regional industry and business department informed Interfax-Kazakhstan. The plant estimated at $53.4 ml will produce gluten (12,000 tons a year) from processing of rye and wheat, feed additives (27,000 tons), bioethanol (30 ml liters).

Russia will begin producing bioethanol at the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008. The output will most likely be exported to Europe and southeastern Asia.

EU-27: EU Program for Energy Crops Oversubscribed

The EU energy crop program has been oversubscribed in 2007. Applications for the 45 Euro/ha energy crop premium have reached 2.84 million hectares this year. The Maximum Guaranteed Area is 2 million hectares. The Commission has decided that farmers will receive the original 45 Euro/ ha for just over 70 percent of the land on which they claimed aid.

Results of Industrial Complex "Biohim" during First Year of Operation

On September 15, one year passed from the start-up of the first in the CIS biotechnological complex — the project which has united a bioethanol plant with capacity of 57 thousand tons/year, feed mill, pig-breeding complex and a number of other large-capacity biotechnological manufactures — «Biohim» (Tajynsha, Kazakhstan), reported the press-centre of Titan.
