Putin calls for stimulating biofuel production.

MOSCOW, November 27 (Itar-Tass)—Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev to look into ways of encouraging the production of agrofuel as an alternative to conventional sources of energy.

«Conditions must be created for businesses to produce bioethanol,» Putin said, as he received the agriculture minister in the Kremlin on Tuesday.

«Extraction of energy from alternative sources has been developing fast.  „In the meantime, the countries capable of offering a sufficient amount of grain for this fuel are very few, and Russia is among them.“ „The alternative energy industry is developing fast and that is why (biofuel) prices are rising,“ — he said.

Russian farmers are capable of providing the necessary amount of grain for ethanol production, he added.

For his part Gordeyev said demand for Russian raw materials for agrofuel production in Europe has been growing. To produce biofuel in sufficient amounts the European countries would have to use approximately one-third of their farmland to grow biomass.

Gordeyev replied that such enterprises were being created already — a bioethanol plant in the Omsk Region and a rape processing plant in Tatarstan. Their products will be primarily addressed to the European markets.
