Home / Bioethanol / News Russia 2009/10 end wheat stocks seen up on year
(The opinions in this report represent the views of SovEcon Ltd, an independent research organisation specialising in agricultural production and trade in the former Soviet Union. They should not be seen as reflecting the views of Reuters).
MOSCOW, March 9 - Russia's wheat stocks are expected to be higher at the end of the 2009/10 crop year in June than they were a year ago because of larger government intervention stocks and limited exports expected from these stocks.
The 5 billion roubles ($168.4 million) of subsidies put aside to compensate the state grain trader for the difference between the price the grain was bought at and the sale price may prove to be insufficient to support massive sales.
The government has yet to elaborate on how it will sell its 10 million-tonne stocks, including whether it will sell the grain ex-silo, FOB or C&F. Sales volumes will depend on the mechanism chosen.
The grain is located at 400 silos across the country, including a substantial part in Siberia, where the costs of shipment to export terminals are comparatively high, because some of the silos are located far from railways.
Another problem is the difficulty in selling grain on world markets, which may require high discounts. As a result, sales of only 100,000 tonnes of wheat to Cuba and 57,000 tonnes of feed grain to Mongolia are currently in the works. Table 1. Ken,Go somewhere else and play in a sadobnx! What on all earth makes you think that the there is so much fossil fuel use by machines and transports that its even close to how much ethanol is produced? You think that they throw money in the sea in Brazil ?The whole idea from the first place in Brazil was to get rid of expensive fossil fuel usage. If it wasnt any profit, not a single gallon of ethanol would be sold for fuel use.The reason that most machines and trucks still use fossil fuels in the ethanol production is only historical, and there is not a big profit in replacing those machines today (Scania are prodcing HD diesels for ethanol for instance), which in turn show how little fossil fuel is needed for the ethanol production.
