Home / Bioethanol / News Russia could harvest 80 mln-85 mln tonnes grain in 2011 - ZubkovRussia could harvest 80 mln-85 mln tonnes grain in 2011 - Zubkov Zubkov said the grain area should increase by 25%-30%. "We're increasing the spring crop area because we didn't sow enough winter grain due to the temperature," Zubkov said. The discounted tariff on grain shipments by rail from southern Russia and from Siberia, which has been extended from December 31 until June 30, ought to help boost the harvest, Zubkov said. This does not mean that the embargo on grain exports will be lifted prematurely, he said. The harvest will also be aided by supplying farmers with intervention fund grain in the form of direct deliveries to the regions and via commodity exchange trading, starting in February. A government decree on this is being readied, Zubkov said. The government is also lending farmers in excess of 150 billion rubles, he said. Russia could boost its grain harvest to 83 million-86 million tonnes this year following the 37.3% drop to 60.9 million tonnes caused by the 2010 summer drought, grain market experts have said. They have said the winter grains were in fairly good condition, the government has made loans more accessible to farmers and curbed prices for mineral fertilizers, fuels and lubricants, higher grain prices will encourage farmers to increase their grain areas, and severe weather is not being forecast. The 2010 drought killed 13.3 million hectares of grain or 30% of the area in the 43 regions affected and 17% of the overall grain area, inflicting direct damages of almost 42 billion rubles. The last time Russia harvested less than 70 million tonnes was in 2003, when the total was 67 million tonnes. The lowest ever harvest in post-Soviet Russia was 47.8 million tonnes in 1998.
