Home / Bioethanol / News Russia should replace usual fuel with bio fuel soonRussia should replace usual fuel with bio fuel soon. Currently, the methods to turn the biomass into ethanol and motor fuels are under development. Bacteriae are playing the role of major reprocessing agents. "For instance, the so-called cyanobacteriae produce mycroalgae. Subsequently, mycroalgae consume the carbon dioxide that under the effect of light transform it into higher fatty acids, which are original substances in the production of ethanol. Ethanol can already be turned into petrol, diesel fuel and kerosene," the academician said. The United States hopes that this technology of producing the bio fuel will help it to halt the oil imports already in ten years, the scientist noted. "They want to replace 50% of diesel fuel with bio fuel by 2020 and intend to completely abandon the use of mineral resources to produce fuel in 20 years," Ilya Moiseyev said. This bio fuel production will be even cheaper than the current fuel production at a proper scale, "Fifteen roubles per litre is considered a very good price, but we offer six roubles," the chemist pledged. "A tonne of bacteriae will generate three tonnes of fuel. Moreover, this can be done at any thermal electric power station," he noted. The mycroalgae can be cultivated everywhere - in the desert, outdoor and indoor facilities - reactors. There is special mobile equipment, which operates aboard a vessel. This equipment absorbs smoking gases and turns it into fuel. The ecological aspect is also important in this technology, RAS Vice-President Nikolai Laverov noted. The carbon dioxide, which is the major air pollutant, can be used as the resource to produce the bio fuel. In the current situation when other countries offer the most fantastic projects to combat the global warming allegedly caused by carbon dioxide - from carbon dioxide dumping sites to sulphate emissions in the upper layers of the atmosphere. "We consider the carbon cycle as a new additional energy resource," Laverov stressed. However, a new fuel production industry meant to replace the existing petrochemical facilities is facing serious barriers on the way of development, RAS President Yuri Osipov said. "This is a scientific problem. Still, it is at the stage of fundamental research, which can be put into practice. But unfortunately their results are not in demand by the industry. Many issues cannot be settled without the authorities," he underlined. "But we witness what is happening in the world, and therefore it is necessary to urgently settle the question of working out a major program to develop this trend of the fuel production industry," the RAS president said. The RAS presidium decided to prepare a special application to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to this effect.
