Russia may become a world leader in the production of biofuels, said Ivan Obolentsev, head of the agricultural commission of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. However, there are problems hindering this project in Russia and the world. In his opinion, Russia has vast areas of idling lands and timber and can therefore become a global leader in the production of biofuels. The Agriculture Ministry has concluded that the country can increase grain production by 20mn metric tons, enough to produce 7mn metric tones of bioethanol annually. As of now, six bioethanol projects are underway in Russia, and 25 more can be launched within years. But experts and market players say biofuels cannot and will not replace oil in the near future, because there is not enough grain to produce the required amounts of bioethanol.
