Ukraine able to boost biofuel production 30 fold - scientists

KYIV, January 14 /UKRINFORM/. The Institute of Renewable Energy under the National Science Academy estimates the volume of biofuel production in Ukraine in 2011 at 1-1.2 million tons, whereas production potential is up to 30 million tons, Institute's Deputy Director Stepan Kudria told a press conference.

"According to our tentative estimates, the volume of biofuel production in 2011, including solid fuel, biodiesel and bioethanol, made up about 1-1.2 million tons," he said.

In turn, Director General of Ukrbioenergo Association Oleksiy Izotenko forecasted that the volume of biofuel production may grow to 10 million tons/year by 2015.

"The unstable situation with gas in Ukraine will promote development of the biofuel sphere in the country, and we prognosticate that by 2015, the volumes of its production may grow to 10 million tons a year," he said.

Izotenko emphasized that in Ukraine biofuel is produced in 20 regions, but 80% is exported abroad, in particular, to the European countries, where it is in great demand.
