Home / Bioethanol / News Ukraine Vehicles To Switch to Biofuel by 2010.Ukrainian News Digest Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has passed a law that requires nine Ukrainian cities with a population over 500,000 to start using biofuels in vehicles by 2010, it was reported on June 13, 2007. Under the law, the government will secure sufficient biofuel production and take legislative measures to impose the use of biofuels on the territory of Ukraine. By 2008, 50 pct of the vehicles in the cities will be converted to run on green fuel, by 2009 it will become obligatory for all vehicles. The law also mandates bioethanol blending in motor fuel. In 2008, bioethanol should account for at least 2.0 pct of the fuel, in 2009 it should reach 3.0 pct, in 2010 a minimum 5.0 pct and in 2011 make up 10 pct of the fuel. The transition to biofuel will be financed by automotive companies, organisations and by the budget. Biofuel is produced from sunflower seeds, rape or soybean - crops abundant in the country. According to Parliament Speaker, Oleksandr Moroz, biofuels should be obtained from locally grown crops, preferrably grains as biofuel produced from maize is 2.5 times cheaper, than ethanol distilled from sugar. By 2010, Ukraine intends to construct 20 plants for biodiesel production, which will have a total capacity of at least 623,000 tonnes annually. Meanwhile, eight local spirits plants have been reconstructed and redesigned for the production of biofuels from sugar refining residuals. In December 2006, Ukrainian Cabinet adopted a programme for the development of biodiesel production in Ukraine until 2010, which will be financed with 69.7 mln Ukrainian hryvnias ($13.9 mln/10.5 mln euro)

Ukrainian Biofuels Blending Law
Dear Biofuels Team, could you please tell me if it is legal and mandatory minimum shares of bioethonal that must be added to normal fuel? Or are the numbers just goals that have not yet obtained legal power? Thanks for your clearance, Daniel Blank. University of Hohenheim, Germany
